ANGER MANAGEMENT TREATMENT

Understanding Anger

Our perspective on anger management treatment is that we do not believe that any of us are just born with feelings of uncontrollable rage and anger. We do not view our clients as having “anger issues”, nor do we believe that anger is a bad emotion that people need to learn to suppress or ignore. We all feel anger. We all need to be able to get angry at certain times, just as we need to be able to feel excited at times. There is no such thing as a bad or ridiculous emotion. Every single feeling serves a purpose.

What we do believe is that there are times when our emotions can feel unbearable, as if they are at an 11 on a scale of 1-10. We find this to be especially true when it comes to anger. Sometimes we grow up in environments where we are told we are not allowed to be angry, or that our anger is unwarranted and unjustified. Sometimes we are even punished for our anger. Other times, we grow up in environments where we have watched others who do not know how to appropriately express their feelings and instead, have turned to violence, abuse, or drugs as a way to express their anger.

Anger Management Treatment

When it comes to working with anger, our treatment approach includes working with clients to help find what triggers those intense feelings and then practicing alternative, healthy outlets to express that anger. However, treatment does not stop there. As a practice that believes in a psychodynamic approach to counseling, we encourage our clients to dive deeper so that we can understand the root of the anger. Understanding where the anger comes from can help to lessen the intensity of it, allowing for an easier time of moving through the feeling instead of becoming stuck in it. Knowing the root of deep-seated anger can help improve your relationship with yourself and your loved ones and can allow you to move through life without feeling so easily triggered.
